Education & Career Development
These are just some of the key programs Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver offers in the Education & Career Development Core Program Area.
Project Learn: Through Project Learn, Club staff use all the areas in the Club to create opportunities for high-yield learning activities, including leisure reading, writing activities, discussions with knowledgeable adults, helping others, homework help, and tutoring and games like Scrabble that develop cognitive skills. Power Hour: Making Minutes Count: This daily program designed to help Club members become more successful in school by providing homework help, tutoring, and by encouraging members to become self-directed learners. Accelerated Reader is a year-round reading program, sponsored by Carmel Hill Foundation. Kids read books, take short quizzes to test reading comprehension, and receive incentives for their participation.
Goals for Growth: This program teaches Club members ages 8 - 12 skills for setting and achieving goals, helps them identify their own strengths, and enhances self-esteem by reinforcing progress and recognizing success in realizing their goals. Junior Staff Career Development: While working at the Clubs, participants learn valuable job skills for future careers while they run the front desk, supervise the gameroom, and maintain the membership tracking system. Opportunity Knocks: There are three components to this program that prepares high school students for life after graduation: College Portfolio Program, Job Readiness, and Crossroads Fair. Money Matters: Make It Count is a program for Club members ages 13 - 18, sponsored by the Charles Schwab Foundation, promoting financial responsibility and independence by building teens' basic money management skills. Special Events and Miscellaneous Programs include events such as Statewide Education Day (with geography, spelling, math, science, and trivia contests), International Day, and a variety of educational games.
