The Arts
These initiatives help young people enhance self-expression and creativity, develop multicultural appreciation, provide exposure to and develop skills in crafts and visual, performing and literary arts.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Fine Arts Exhibit Program: This year-round program encourages artistic expression among Club members of all ages through drawing, painting, pastels, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and sculpture displayed at local and regional exhibits. A panel of distinguished judges selects works for inclusion in the National Fine Arts Exhibit, which debuts at BGCA’s annual National Conference and is displayed throughout the following year at other BGCA events. Boys & Girls Clubs of America ImageMakers National Photography Contest: This year-round program and annual contest, sponsored by Circuit City Foundation, encourage girls and boys ages 6-18 to learn and practice black and white, color and digital process photography. The ImageMakers National Photography Contest provides local, regional and national recognition. Haunted House: Arts staff and Keystone members create a maze through the art room, Club hallways, locker rooms, and the gym. Teen members act in the Haunted House and serve as tour guides to the younger members. Pinewood Derby: Young people design and assemble pinewood cars that are then judged on design and speed. Easter Hat Parade: Members create extravagant hats from basic materials. Winners are selected in three age groups based on creativity, use of materials, and festivity. Youth of the Year Variety Show: Members from all Clubs have the opportunity to perform at the annual Youth of the Year Gala. Selected members practice in their Clubs and perform at a dress rehearsal/dinner for their family and friends. International Day: Members create storyboards with fun facts on various countries of the world. Participating members are eligible to attend BGCMD's International Day celebration, where they enjoy a multi-ethnic meal, engage in topical workshops with professional artists and performers, and complete a world facts scavenger hunt based on their storyboards, which are also displayed at the event. Other art events include creative writing, multicultural crafts, coloring contests, music mixing, dance, acting and comedy improv, and much, much more. |
